Sri Thyagarajaswamy Temple
Sri Thyagarajaswamy Temple is dedicated to Somaskandar, a form of Lord Shiva. The temple complex has shrines of other gods, such as the Kamalaamba, Vanmikanathar and Thyagarajar. It also has a Kamalalayam temple tank which is considered to be the largest in India. The Thyagaraja car festival is celebrated at this temple once in 12 years, along with the Kumbabishekam. This festival is known as Azhazhi Ther and is celebrated in the month of April.
Muttupettai
Muttupettai, also known as Muthupettai, is an ideal tourist spot having large mangrove forests. These forests spread over an area of 120 sq km and are inhabited by diifferent species of flora and fauna. The reserved forests of Muttupettai are the best place for birdwatching as birds like tern, grey heron, flamingos and painted stork can be seen here. The birds can be seen near the Jambavanodai Lagoon, from spots like the visitor’s centre and the watchtower built by the state government.
City Garden
The City Garden, located in Thiruvarur, is known for the beautifully designed landscape and flowering plants. There are many pathways, a children’s playground and water fountains in the garden.
Neelameghaperumal Temple
The Neelameghaperumal Temple, a 10th century shrine of Lord Shiva, was constructed by the Chola kings. The main sanctum is situated inside a huge tower measuring about 100 ft in height. This temple also has small shrines of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Parvati.
Kothanda Ramar Temple
The Kothanda Ramar Temple is situated in Thillaivilagam near Mudikondan, between Thiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai. The main deity of the temple is Lord Rama, whose idol is decorated with a beautiful crown. The temple as well as the Mudikondan village is considered to be more than 20 centuries old. It is also considered to be the holy abode of Lord Rama.
Agnipureeswarar Temple
The Agnipureeswarar Temple is 126th in the series of Tevara Stalams in the Chola region, which covers areas south of the Kaveri River. The prime deity, Lord Shiva, is believed to have married Goddess Parvati at this temple. The temple has several inscriptions related to epics and kings of the Chola Dynasty.
Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple
Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple in Kudavasal village is devoted to Lord Srinivasa, a form of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Lord Srinivasa, along with his consorts Bhoomadevi and Sridevi, appears here. It is the only north-facing sanctum of Lord Srinivasa in the world. The 400 years old temple was constructed by Maharajah Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagar Dynasty between 1509 and 1529.
Udayamarthandapuram Bird Sanctuary
The Udayamarthandapuram Bird Sanctuary covers an area of around 45 sq km and is fed by an irrigation tank that receives water from the Mettur Dam. The tank remains dry between the months of April and August.
During the months of February and March, purple-moorhen and openbill storks can be seen here. Other migratory birds in the sanctuary include the white-ibis, Indian reef heron, white-necked stork, grey-heron, coot, night heron, purple-heron, little cormorant, spoonbill and darter.
From September through December, the bird population inhabiting the sanctuary rises to around 10,000 birds. The ideal season to visit this sanctuary is during the months of November and December.
Pathanjali Manoharar Temple
Pathanchali Manoharar Temple is a Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Vilamal Village in Thiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Pathanjali Manoharar and Mother is called as Mathurabhasini / Thenmozhi Ammai (honey like speech) / Yaazhinum Men Mozhi Ammai (voice sweeter than Yazh, a musical instrument). It is one of the shrines of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams - Shiva Sthalams glorified in the early medieval Thevaram poems by Tamil Saivite Nayanar Thirugnana Sambandar. This is the 207th Devaram Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 90th Sthalam on the south side of river Cauvery in Chozha Nadu.
Saraswati Temple
The Saraswati Temple, situated in Kuthanur village on the banks of the Arasilar River, is devoted to Goddess Saraswati, the consort of Lord Brahma. Local people believe that during the 12th century, a Tamil poet, Ottakuttar, meditated to Goddess Saraswati for creating this temple at Kuthanur. At the entrance of the temple, there is an image of Ottakuttar welcoming the devotees.
Sri Rajagopalaswamy Temple
Sri Rajagopalaswamy Temple, situated in Mannargudi, is dedicated to Rajagopalaswamy, an incarnation of Lord Krishna. It is a Vaishnavite shrine and covers an area of around 23 acres.
The temple has a 12 ft tall idol of the main deity. It also has 24 shrines, 7 mandapams, 9 theerthams, 16 gopurams and 7 prakarams that were constructed by Kulothunga Chola I.
These structures were renovated by the subsequent Chola rulers and the Thanjavur Nayaks. In the month of March, Par Pughalum Panguni Tiruvizha is celebrated at the temple.
